What Does Depression Look Like?
Everyone deals with sadness, too.
Depression, though, is more than regular sadness that comes and goes. Depression is being stuck and weighed down. You might feel sad or numb, but you struggle to remember the last time you felt happy. The spark of life is just…gone.
If you are suffering from depression, you might have noticed some of the following:
- You used to love doing ____ (fill in the blank), but now you wonder, What’s the point?
- Eating is either a chore or never seems to fill you up
sleep is an issue–you’re either always falling asleep or can’t get enough - You don’t like the person you see in the mirror
sometimes, even getting out of bed takes all your energy - Ending it all starts to seem like your best option
*you feel achy all over
Does Depression Treatment Work?
All counseling needs three things for success:
- A talented, well-trained therapist with depression treatment tools that are proven to work
- Your openness and willingness to process through the pain and let go
- A good fit between you and the therapist
At Hope For The Journey, we pride ourselves on pushing the envelope. Our team provides state-of-the-art depression counseling, anxiety treatment, and PTSD help. Our therapists love to learn, and we always push ourselves to improve.Â
Additionally, we see the beauty of a good therapeutic match. Are we a good match for everyone? No, of course not. But, we promise to help support you in making that decision with as little upfront investment of time and money as possible. We can help you with referrals if it looks like another counselor or group would meet your needs better.Â
So, as long as you have the openness and willingness part squared away, we’d love to get to work!

Effective Depression Treatment Involves Three Steps
Manage Depression Symptoms
Heal What Hurts
Find Meaning, Self-Compassion, & Balance
Manage Depression Symptoms
We believe that if you aren’t at least starting to feel better within the first 1-3 sessions of counseling, it may not be a good fit. Or we aren’t doing our jobs. You are coming to depression treatment to feel better. So, we’ll start by learning what works for you. Together, we will shift gears, restart, and spark hopefulness when you’re feeling down.Â
Heal What Hurts
As trauma therapists, we believe depression arises from unresolved pain from the past. So, a big part of your depression treatment will involve figuring out what is left unresolved. Together, we will help you to move through that pain so you can let it go. You’ll start to understand yourself or what you went through from a place of compassion and calm.
Find Meaning
We know. That sounds pretty granola and may even be a little naive. But these are things proven to insulate you from depression and anxiety.
Finding something that makes your life feel purposeful and worthwhile is huge. It doesn’t have to be something huge either. Many people find meaning in nature, or their families, or in the simple task of making someone smile.
Practice Self Compassion
Self-compassion is not selfish, and it will not make you lazy.
It is learning to treat yourself with respect and kindness in thought, body, and mind. Research shows self-compassion helps keep warriors from getting PTSD and moms of special needs kids from burning out. Self-compassion is powerful and can be learned.
Find Balance
Balance means keeping things in perspective. For each person, this might look different. For some, it might involve making time for exercise. For someone else, it might involve having tricks to help you be more unbiased and stay out of “black-and-white thinking.” Your therapist will help you explore what balance looks like for you and help you install it.
