Hope For The Journey

Therapist Provides
10 Signs You Might
Need Therapy

Do you ever wonder if therapy would be helpful to you or how you can tell that therapy is needed? This is a common question many people find themselves asking when experiencing a stressor in their lives or when someone does not feel quite like themselves. I recognize that it is not always easy to admit to ourselves when it may be helpful to reach out for support. Here are 10 signs that can help identify if you need some additional support in your journey.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #1: Feeling Extremely Overwhelmed

Feeling overwhelmed can impact a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Being overwhelmed can make it extremely difficult to be productive in your life. You might notice that you are becoming easily stressed, unable to regulate emotions, experiencing relationship issues, job issues, or unable to handle basic daily activities. Therapy can be beneficial in identifying triggers, stressors, and finding adaptive ways of coping through it. When you are feeling overwhelmed it can feel helpless and mental health providers can assist in calming down the overwhelm so change can happen.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #2: Trouble Sleeping

Sleeping too much or not getting enough sleep can be our body’s way of telling us that something may be going on. Sleep and mental health are closely connected. When you are not getting enough sleep, you might notice that you experience more negative unhelpful thoughts, irritability, or become more emotionally unregulated. Therapy can help a client to identify what may be going on in their day-to-day life that may be causing unwanted stress and impacting their sleep.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #3: Feeling Hopeless

The feeling of hopelessness can be described as feeling despair or a lack of hope that your life can feel better than what it is now. When you experience feelings of being hopeless it may cause a spiral of negative thinking. Or it can be challenging to see the positive in life and find the motivation to work towards accomplishing things that once brought you joy. Therapy can help you gain a sense of hope again for your future. Therapists can help identify your strengths and fine tune your ability to problem solve in a healthy and safe way.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #4: Frequent Unpleasant Negative Thoughts

The experience of frequent negative thoughts about ourselves and about the world can cause us to experience extreme stress or anxiety. These unpleasant thoughts can hold us back from being productive in our lives and to enjoy life itself. A therapist can help a client determine the root cause for the experienced negative thoughts and can assist the client in finding healthy coping strategies to decrease the negative thinking.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #5: Change in Appetite

If you suddenly notice that you are eating more or less than what is normal for you, you could be experiencing emotional eating or decreased appetite. People who are struggling with mental health concerns, often see a change in their eating habits. Therapy can support a client in determining the possible cause for the change in appetite and can help to provide the client with helpful grounding exercises that can help the client manage their stress level.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #6: Work or School Issues

Are you finding that your production level is not where it normally is? This can be a sign that your production level is being impacted and this can be due to stress. Stress we experience that originates from us recognizing that we are not doing our best or living up to expectations of ourselves or loved ones can lead to severe mental health concerns if not addressed. Therapy can help to explore what may be impacting the client’s motivation level and ways to increase motivation, so that they can feel positive about their abilities.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #7: Grief

Maybe you just ended a relationship, lost a loved one, or experienced a loss of a job, etc. these experiences can cause us to experience grief. Grief can be complex, due to there not being a timeline or one right way for someone to grief. There is not a rule set in stone about how long someone should take to heal from their grief. However, if your grief has been extended and it is affecting your daily life, this can be something that a mental health professional can help support you with, so that you are able to heal and have hope for the future.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #8: Feeling Like You Just Don’t Care Anymore

Feeling irritable all the time or feeling that you do not have the energy or care enough to do basic activities, such as grooming, getting out of bed, or showing up to school or work. These symptoms are a clear sign that it is time to get support from a mental health professional. A therapist can help a client to address the concerns of not having energy to do daily activities, by helping a client understand and work through the issues that are impacting their life in negative ways.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #9: Withdrawal From Social Activities

Are you typically a social person but recognizing you are withdrawing from friends and family? Are you feeling emotionally drained? Or avoidant of social gatherings or things you once you enjoyed? This is a telltale sign that you may need to seek support for depressive symptoms. Clinicians can assist in determining what may be causing this level of avoidance and sensations of being drained.

Sign You Might Need Therapy #10: Trauma

Have you ever had an experience in life that you may be conflicted if it qualifies as trauma or not? If trauma is left unchecked it can impact our mental health in significant ways. It can interfere with our relationships, jobs, and the way we show up in the world. Because you may not recognize that the experience was trauma or how it is affecting you, a clinician can assist in identifying this experience without judgement. Therapy helps guide clients into a safe and non-judgemental environment for healing to occur. Trauma therapy can assist in finding new skills and resources to manage the array or aversive experiences you may have endured.
