Is Talk Therapy Not
Working For You?
Here’s What You
Need
0:01 / 1:57 What To Do If Talk Therapy Isn’t Working
Traditional talk therapy doesn’t work for all diagnoses and can sometimes make things worse. This is true if you have PTSD symptoms or a history of trauma.
Have you been in therapy for a long time and it’s just not working? Or maybe you went in the past and it helped a little, but then all the same issues came creeping back in? You are not alone! You can spend a ton of time and money working with excellent therapists doing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Psychoanalysis only to find out that it’s not what you needed. That can feel frustrating and often leads to questions of whether or not you will ever feel better. If you can be healed at all.
Why Traditional Talk Therapy Doesn’t Work
But we’re here to assure you that there is a good chance you can be helped. You can live the life you’ve always wanted and actually leave those old patterns behind. It’s just that you essentially have been taking an aspirin for a cough. Aspirin is good medicine for a headache, but it does nothing for a cough. Similarly, traditional talk therapy can be wonderful, but it does not heal unresolved trauma.
Unresolved Trauma…What?
So, how do you know if you have unresolved trauma? Great question! Many people don’t consider themselves having unresolved trauma because you can always think of an example of someone who had it much worse than you. Right? If you were sexually abused, but not raped, it can’t be trauma, right? If you weren’t abused at all, but your parents divorced, it can’t be trauma, right? If your childhood was happy all except those recurring ear aches as a child that you don’t even remember but your mom has told stories about, it can’t be trauma…right?
The Real Truth About Trauma
Wrong. Trauma is anything that didn’t get fully processed during or right after an event. It can be as small as a childhood fight with a best friend to as big as surviving a terrorist attack. Often we don’t even remember or have an awareness of what is causing relationship problems or emotional eating today. But chances are good that if you haven’t gotten the results you want from traditional talk therapy, it might just be unresolved trauma.
